Zambia
and Japan will On Friday 28th October, 2016; celebrate a 30 years
relationship among the University of Zambia School of Veterinary Medicine,
Hokkaido University and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The
establishment of the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Zambia
was financed through grant aid by the Government of Japan at a cost of approximately
3.9 billion Japanese Yen; an equivalent of 19.5 million US Dollars in 1983.
Prior
to the establishment of the School of Veterinary Medicine, there were only a
total of 70 veterinarians in Zambia and of these only 8 were Zambian nationals.
Currently the School has produced over 600 Graduates since its establishment.
This
partnership between the university of Zambia and Hokkaido University has grown
in strides and milestones have been achieved through training programs and
materials for improved veterinary services in Zambia implemented by JICA projects.
Currently the school houses the Hokkaido
University Africa Lusaka Office, Hokkaido University Research Center for Zoonosis
Control, Surveillance of Viral Zoonosis in Africa and the project For Visualization
of Impact Chronic and Latent Chemical Hazard and Dual Ecological Remediation in
Zambia; all of which are implemented as JICA projects.
To
commemorate this 30 years historic partnership, JICA has organized a ceremony
were a symbolic plaque will be unveiled.
Those invited to this momentous event
include the Charges d'Affaires ad interim of Japan to the Republic of Zambia
representing the Embassy of Japan, the Vice Chancellor for the University of
Zambia and senior management from the university, the Chief Resident
Representative for JICA, the Ministry of Education and representatives for
various media houses.
JICA
is a bilateral organization supplementing Government efforts in enhancing
development in various sectors that include; Infrastructure development,
Health, Education, Agriculture, Water and the Private Sector.
JICA also provides training opportunities in Japan as part of improving human resource skills.
