WE NEED TO FIND SOLUTIONS TO COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE

Energy Minister Peter Kapala says there is an urgent need to motivate and inspire collective action towards finding and implementing solutions to combat climate change.

Speaking when he officiated at the Earth Hour in Lusaka under the theme; is a call to action, Hon Kapala said to achieve this goal, the government is committed to raising awareness amongst citizens about the crucial significance of individual actions.

He said actions that focus on energy efficiency and conservation, protection of water resources and safeguarding the environment are critical as we proactively tackle climate change.

"One of the adverse impacts of climate change is the energy crisis that has resulted from low water levels in our hydropower stations due to reduced rainfall," Hon Kapala said.

He noted that government supports all programs that encourage efficient utilization of the country’s resources for power generation especially in the fight against climate change and the degradation of the environment.

Speaking earlier WWF Zambia County Director Nalucha Nganga Ziba said the occurrence of flash floods, severe droughts and intense heat waves have ravaged the environments affecting the economic development as a country due to the increased unsustainable exploitation of the natural resources.

She said adoption of agroecological practices amid the drought crisis to enhance the country's national food security for mindset change and it's about time the country explored nature based interventions in form of eco-friendly agricultural practices such as winter cropping, home gardens and orchard of early maturity fruit trees and vegetables.

"As we continue to decorate our environment it will continue to act through the effects of climate change. As the natural environment remains a great source of our very own livelihoods and one of the biggest allies against the climate crisis, deforestation poses an alarming threat to increase the loss of the biodiversity as a country," She said.
