The Lusaka City Council-LCC has recently received media reports of certain butcheries within the city allegedly using unknown chemicals to preserve their meat products amidst the prolonged hours of loadshedding.

LCC Public Relations Manager Chola Mwamba said the alarming issue has raised serious concerns about the safety and quality of meat being sold to consumers in Lusaka.

Ms Mwamba said LCC  is taking the reports very seriously and has launched an immediate investigation into the matter.

“The Council is taking these reports very seriously and has launched an immediate investigation into the matter. Our top priority is to ensure the health and well-being of our residents by maintaining strict standards for food safety and hygiene,”Ms Mwamba said.

She stated that the Local Authority has always been conducting meat inspections and will enhance sampling of meat for chemical analΓ½sis in view of the allegations.

Ms Mwamba has urged all butchery owners and operators to adhere to the regulations set forth by the City Council and to prioritize the safety of their customers.

“We strongly urge all butchery owners and operators to adhere to the regulations set forth by the City Council and to prioritize the safety of their customers. The use of any unauthorized chemicals or substances in the preservation of meat products is not only illegal but also poses a serious risk to public health,”She noted.

She has encouraged consumers to be vigilant and cautious when purchasing meat products from local butcheries.

“If you suspect any irregularities or have concerns about the quality of meat being sold, please report to the Lusaka City Council - LCC immediately,”She said

She added that the Local authority is committed to working closely with relevant authorities and stakeholders to address this issue swiftly and effectively.

She said LCC will not tolerate any actions that compromise the safety and well-being of our residents.
