The Zambia Metrology Agency has seized five (5) Unverified scales from Yahya Investments in Lusaka, Buseko area following a joint operation with the Competition and Consumers Protection Commission (CCPC) and the Lusaka City Council (LCC).
In a statement made available to the media ZMA Senior Public Relations Officer Sandra Mwila said Following a tip off from members of the public preliminary investigations indicate that Yahya investments have been pre-packaging various food products using unverified and unregistered scales among other discrepancies.
Ms Mwila said all scales used on the market to pre-package goods are mandated by law to be verified by ZMA and should bear a certified for use sticker.
Ms Mwila said the team of inspectors that pounced on the company also found a number of products such as tomato sauce, water, rice among other products which did not comply with the prescribed labelling and packaging including quantity declarations.
"According to the section 25 of the Metrology Act 6 of 2017 “Where a measuring instrument is offered for sale, sold or placed on the market for use, subject to the legal metrology requirements provided for in this Act, the seller shall inform the buyer about the seller’s legal metrology requirements and status and offer the measuring instruments appropriate for the intended use”.
Act with regard to pre -packaging companies under section 30 (1) “A local supplier of prepackaged commodities or person wishing to pre -package commodities covered by Act shall, before offering or exposing the pre-packaged commodities for sale, apply to the Agency for registration in the prescribed manner and form. In Section 30 (2) A local supplier referred in subsection (1) shall provide the Agency with the required information and be subjected to an audit’’. Ms Mwila explained.
Ms Mwila noted that the Agency has since cautioned members of the public to be alert and ensure all products that they purchase on the market bear the correct labeling and net quantity declaration.
