The Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) is set to convene its 56th Executive Committee Meeting on Thursday, 4th April 2024, in Lusaka, the capital city of the Republic of Zambia.
Zesco Spokesperson Matongo Maumbi said the gathering will be presided over by the Managing Director of Zambia’s national power utility, ZESCO Limited, Eng. Victor Benjamin Mapani, in his distinguished role as the Chairperson of SAPP.
Mr Maumbi says the torchbearer of collaborative energy efforts in the region, this year’s meeting marks a crucial step forward, in addressing the strategic challenges and opportunities identified during the previous 55th Executive Committee Meeting.
He said high on the agenda will be discussions meant to shape the future of energy in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) – including deliberations on key matters with the SADC Energy Ministers and the election of the incoming SAPP Executive Committee Chairperson and Vice Chairperson.
He noted that the SAPP, a cornerstone for regional energy cooperation, encompasses 17 power utilities from 12-member countries.
Mr Maumbi said this year, as Zambia concludes its tenure as the Chair of SAPP, the meeting in Lusaka represents a momentous occasion to reflect on past achievements and to pave the way for future advancements in regional energy integration and sustainability.
He noted that In a show of unity and commitment to the region's energy future, the meeting will see a collaborative effort from ZESCO Limited, Copperbelt Energy Corporation Plc (CEC), Lunsemfwa Hydro Power Company, and Ndola Energy, with valuable support from Absa, Bank Zambia, ZANACO, GreenCo Power Services Limited, NR Electric and Maamba Collieries Limited.
He added that together, the entities underscore the collective drive towards enhancing energy access, reliability, and sustainability across the SADC region, heralding a new era of energy cooperation in Southern Africa.
