GOV'T COMMENDS CEJ FOR SUPPORTING SAVINGS GROUPS IN SINAZONGWE

The Government has paid tribute to the Centre for Environment Justice (CEJ) for donating K10,000 to ten more savings groups each in Sinazongwe District, Southern Province, as part of the Community Revolving Fund initiative.

Sinazongwe District Commissioner Nchimunya Siakole expressed gratitude to CEJ's development partners, Bread for the World and the Southern Africa Trust, for facilitating the availability of these funds.

Mr Siakole noted that CEJ’s efforts in promoting responsible mineral extraction and community rights were commendable, highlighting the importance of ensuring that mining activities adhere to environmental, social, and governance standards.

The senior government official remarked that CEJ's initiatives have reached communities that the government cannot access, thereby raising awareness and aiding disadvantaged groups, particularly young girls.

He mentioned that the financial assistance provided had led to the establishment of more cooperatives and expressed hope that such support would persist in the future.

The District Commissioner underscored the significance of collaboration between the government, civil society, and development partners in furthering sustainable development.

Mr. Siakole praised CEJ’s dedication to empowering communities through economic justice initiatives and providing access to financial resources, emphasizing that community empowerment remains a key priority for the Government of Zambia.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fostering an environment that supports such initiatives during the handover of the Community Revolving Funds, which directly invests in the populace by providing financial aid to ten community groups for income-generating activities.

Earlier, Centre for Environment Justice (CEJ) Executive Director Maggie Mapalo Mwape, said the organisation has expanded its support from four groups initially to ten groups now.

She said the additional funding is from Bread for the World in Germany and the Southern Africa Trust in South Africa.

Ms Mwape highlighted CEJ's commitment to advancing responsible mineral extraction and community rights, ensuring that mining activities respect environmental, social, and governance standards.

She expressed her hope that the support would continue in the future, as the financial aid has enabled the formation of more cooperatives.

The CEJ Executive Director reiterated that community empowerment is a key priority for CEJ and that the organisation remains committed to collaborating with government and community members.
