A Climate change expert advises Zambian government to formulate a mechanism that will be able to provide compensation to victims of climate change

A climate change expert has advised the Zambian government to formulate a mechanism that will be able to urgently provide compensation to victims of climate change under the loss and damage funds pledged by the International community at the on going COP 28 in Dubai.

Speaking in an interview, Abel Musumali said there is a goodwill from international community that is willing to provide funding to the African and Oceanic Countries under Loss and damage, but the only challenge is on how these funds will reach the affected communities.

He said the impact of climate change is mostly affected by vulnerable communities that suffer from droughts and floods, and the loss and damage funds is meant to offer assistance to such communities.

He said with the best mechanism in place, the loss and damage fund will be able to help vulnerable communities impacted by climate change.

Mr. Musumali said in a situation, where the system on the disbursement of funds is not available, then the assistance from the loss and damage fund will be reaching the victims too late.

Mr. Musumali further thanked the international community attending the COP 28 that has pledged money under the loss and damage funds. The final amount under the Loss and damage fund will be announced at the end of the conference.
