A local Non Governmental Organisation is supporting more than 3000 children from 10 schools in Zimba District of Southern Province with safe clean water and sanitation as a way of mitigating the impact of climate change on children.
Environment Africa Project Officer Evas Kachepa said this in an interview at the ongoing COP 28 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Ms. Kachepa said her organization has drilled 10 boreholes and 50 toilets in 10 selected schools in Zimba District.
She said the organization has also provided 10 water harvest tanks as a way of providing safe clean water during the scarcity of water in this areas.
Ms. Kachepa said everything that her organization is engaged is to ensure that the rights of children are protected.
She said currently her organization is working in 11 districts of Zambia, namely Solwezi, Kabwe, Chibombo, Chisamba, Gwembe, Sinazongwe, Zimba, Livingstone, Kazungula, Mwandi and Sesheke.
Ms. Kachepa said her organization is focusing on the children, because they are mostly affected by climate change.
Meanwhile a youth from Livingstone who is a beneficiary of the services of Environment Africa, Levy Muwana said the support from the organization has led to the youths in Livingstone to form an entrepreneur called trash for cash.
Muwana said, Livingstone produces 90 tonnes of gabbarge, and only manages to collect 40 tones.
His organization therefore assist in managing of the remaining trash in livingstone.
He said the youths have had their capacity built and they are now able to run a business that also protects the environment.
